One of the better known committees in the Academy deals with the creation of new words for general use. As opposed to committees that focus on terms associated with specific professions, the initiative for general words tends to come from the public, who seeks Hebrew alternatives for foreign words that are commonly used in everyday speech.

It is difficult to form a rule as to when borrowed foreign terms should remain and when they should be replaced by Hebrew terms. Such a decision is affected by how rooted the term already is in everyday speech, whether it is easily pronounceable for Hebrew speakers, whether the term also generates verbs and adjectives, how much it is a cultural phenomenon (such as the names of foods), and, of course, whether a Hebrew alternative would be convenient, catchy and appropriate.
